PRAY WITH ME 2
Dear friend,
How fervent can we pray when the request has absolutely nothing to do with us or any of our needs? How effective can we give into praying for the needs of others when we have our own needs looking straight at us?
Waking up this morning, I heard those questions quietly in my heart and I do not think we should take it lightly. Some of us (Christians) find it increasingly difficult to pray for another person when we have our own problems to pray about. I will share some secrets with you but before I do;
know that we cannot learn to pray effectively without seeing the need to pray for others.
What I am about to say may not sound conventionally correct or may sound absolutely new to you, but think about it.
Secrets of praying:
1. Prayer is first communal before it is personal: You are not qualified for personal needs if you have not learnt to pray for the needs of others. Others may be your children, wife, family, friends, neighbors, colleagues or leaders. If the only name God hears when ever you kneel to pray is yours, then you really do not know how to pray effectively. Jesus did not teach his disciples a “Me” prayer but an “Us” prayer. He did not teach them a “My” but an “Our” prayer. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying you cannot ask for personal things, but you must learn to meet other persons needs, especially in the place of prayer.
2. Praying in the spirit helps you pray for everything: I am one of those believer who believes that every believer should receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the sign of speaking in tongues. Simply because it is easier to pray a selfless prayer praying in tongues than it is praying in your understanding. Earnestly long after the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the sign of praying in other tongues.
So how can I get my motives right when I pray?
1. Genuinely spend more time praying for others than you pray for your needs. This helps in setting our motives right quicker than you can expect. Genuinely praying for another helps us see our own needs different, it helps us love more, it helps you become more selfless and it brings us into the place where we become problem solvers amongst others.
2. Be entirely open before God. We must know that there is nothing we can hide from him, so just tell him exactly how you feel about what you are praying for. If you are praying because you are not happy, or because you think you have been cheated, lied about or because you need to increase your prayer life to feel more spiritual...just tell him.
3. Know what God's will is: It us very important we know and understand what God's will is...it helps us to know how and what to pray for. We would not spend time praying for a selfish course if we know it is not the will of God. Study and pray...it is simply because, if we pray with the right understanding of God's in our mouth we will not pray selfishly.
