#Lesson 3
_listen twice as much as you talk
Dear friend,
Today I will be sharing lesson three with you and you can judge how relevant this is for today. However, I will advise that before you go to bed everyday, take just a little time to review your day and pick out the lessons that the day brought to you. Doing that would help you appreciate everyday and every step you take.
This lesson I am about sharing may not be new to you, infact you may have been applying it, but just be open to see it from my eyes.
Several years back I was privilege to hear Dr. Myles Munroe say something that brought this lesson out for me. Lately, I had to apply it and have seen it work. He said, "if I have 20 minutes to talk and listen, I will spend 5 talking and 15 listening" (paraphrased).
LESSON THREE:
3. Listen twice as much as you talk.
You can choice to see it this way: why does every man have two ears and one mouth? I this light, I believe it is simply because every man should listen twice as much as he talks. So if I talk 10 times, I should liaten 20 times. If I talk 5 times I should hear 10 times. So it is hard to find someone who talks so much to listen twice as much as he talks. The way out is to simply reduce the talking, which must be delibrate. It does not just happen. Before you talk always ask yourself if you have listened enough and if what you are about to say is relevant and helpful to the persons who is about to listen to you.
While I was sitting in my room thinking about the lessons God has revealed to me this season and listening to people send in their condolences, I suddenly discovered that the only time we listen to others is the time we are not talking. As long as we are they ones talking, we only either listen to ourselves or we are not the ones listening at all. It is that simply, because we cannot talk and listen to others at the same time.
So Dr. Myles said he spends more time listening to God during his time of prayer than he does talking to God.
Jesus has amazing things to teach us (through the Holy Spirit) if we would just stop talking, be quiet and start listening to Him not ourselves. He said to his disciples, "the knowledge of the secret of the kingdom has been given to you.” They received it by faith through listening to Jesus, yes even in prayer.
