CONSEQUENCES FOR YOUR ACTIONS

Rethink: If there were no consequences for your action, how would you act?
Text: Ecclesiastes 8:11
Dear friend,
Permit me to ask you this question; if there were no consequences for your actions, would you still do good?
This question has been in my heart throughout yesterday. I started wondering why I (we)do the things I (we) do.
Do we restrain ourselves from doing evil just because of the fear of being caught or because we fear the consequences that would follow our actions? Whatever the case, I wasn't satisfied with either of the options.
Then I came to this conclusion last night.
I discover that if there were no consequences for our actions, a great number of us would NEVER do good.
And the reason why most of us do what is bad is either because we have never been caught or we just love to do it.
So there are two reason why every man does what he does:
1. Because he loves it
2. Because he hates it.
(Hebrews 1:9)
Both of them are the same, that is to say, if you love good you hate evil and if you hate good you love evil.
Ecclesiastes 8:11
Says when the crime is not punished quickly, people feel it is safe to do wrong.
Which means one of the reasons why people would stop doing wrong is if the crime is punished quickly.
But because is often gradual, we now think it's safe to do wrong, as long as you don't get caught. We rarely even think of the consequences.
But, Is it ever safe to do wrong???
Even when the consequences are not instant, it is safe?
Let me explain the word consequence. It was gotten from the root word con- which means "to follow" and Sequi which means "after". Put them together you'll have "to follow after"
So it means that for every action, there is something that follows after it.
The question now is, what has been following after you because of an action that you did?
Finally, Scripture says, goodness and mercy shall follow after me all the days of my life. You see, there is a manner of man goodness and mercy follows. And this is a man who has made the Lord he shepherd, who loves good and hates evil.
Restrain yourself from doing evil over and over again until you arrive at hating it.
Keep doing good over and over again until you arrive at loving it.
