#Advantages
_ Everyone was born with an advantage.
Key scripture: John 16:7
"But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
If there is one thing I'm sure isn't left out most time in an exam question is, "state the advantages and disadvantages of..." But we have come to understand that some things have more disadvantages than advantages, and vise versa.
*None of us is more spiritually advantaged*
This is so true in spiritual matters. But in other areas of life we may be able to claim some innate advantage. An athlete may be born with good legs and strong body, a musician may also be born with an exceptional voice or a footballer with good skills. But none of us can claim an innate spiritual advantage. In a real sense, we are all spiritually disadvantaged. None of us seeks God naturally, none does good instinctively, none of us was born righteous.
But the great news is that, we are all equally advantaged. Jesus said, "it is to your advantage I go." *His going was an advantage to us. Bringing us into fellowship with the father through Jesus by the Holy Spirit.*
*You are not more disadvantaged*
So many of us need to let that sink down into our head. At the sight of another person's fellowship and walk in with God you feel, "oh I wish I could do that," "I only wish I could be as close to God in that way, but for this weakness or that. "
For me, I struggled with a weakness for years and trusted God to help me get through and out of it. Everytime I had to battle with it I felt like something is wrong with me, how could this last for this long and for every step I keep falling. It felt like I was more disadvantaged, like I was standing on the wrong side of the road, like I'm missing out something (It may be same for you). But the moment I got to know that I am as advantaged as any other believers, I found just a little strength to wait on God and overcome.
*Don't focus on that disadvantage*
The problem with most believer is that we focus more on the disadvantages - none of us is born righteous, the body is weak but the spirit is willing, I'm sick and can't pray for a long time or fast, no one is perfect...and so on.
*But we must choose to focus on the advantages while we don't lose sight of the disadvantages*
Paul never lost sight of his disadvantages, but he never focused on it. He would say how he isn't eloquent but yet a great writer. You must learn to focus on your advantage. - On Thursday I'll talk about natural advantages...
*The gift of the Holy Spirit is man's greatest advantage*
The Holy Spirit wasn't sent to some believers, but to all believers. So we are all equally greatly advantaged. But most of us don't know how, we don't know what exactly this advantages are, we don't even think having the Holy Spirit (the Helper) is an advantage we have above the world.
*If we receive Help from the Helper, there is nothing we can't overcome*
Some of the problems we stay in are tied to the fact that we have failed to receive help. Not necessarily because we don't have help. Jesus called Him the Helper. Help is not a hard word to call. When you need help acknowledge that you do need help. The Holy Spirit would not come down to help you, he'd send help from outside, or speak to you on the inside. Don't feel humiliated when you receive help from outside. *You would die in silence if you are too proud to ask for help or receive help*
Sometimes not only Jesus has to go away for us to step up to our responsibilities. Sometimes our boss has to go away, our father, mother or anyone handling the job. You wouldn't know how much you can get done with the Helper by your side.
*Get use to letting go of a position the moment your job is done*
Jesus was done with the job He came to do and there was not reason staying back and maintaining that position. He had to give way for the Helper to come. And that was of great advantage to us!
